Research activities:

Under the UGC – Innovative Programme (2005-2010) a Special paper on Biocatalysis for Industry, Medicine & Environment”, the Department of Chemistry, under Innovative Programme, (2005-2010) – Teaching & Research in Interdisciplinary and emerging areas,  (Total Amount sanctioned: Rs. 9.50 lakhs), the Coordinator, Dr. K. Anil Kumar carried out the following work during April to December 2005.

Preliminary research work on hydroxlylation of deactivated aromatic rings is being carried out. The special paper on Biocatalysis for Industry, Medicine and Environment is being taught for II MSc.(Chemistry) students which would give strong foundation to the students in Bio-transformations – an important Green Chemistry Approach. This will train the students in the application of this methodology for developing eco-friendly chemical processes, environmental remediation methods and  drug  detoxification  routes.  In  the course of the practical component of this paper the students will get hands on experience in designing and working with the instrumentation involved in Biocatalytic procedure. A number of case studies indicating the use of Biocatalytic procedures in Industry and Bioremediation is being taken up to make the course more interactive and need based. A compulsory Project work will enhance the research acumen in the students.

Other highlights:

  • In 1991 Hons. programme was introduced at the B.Sc. level and the department extended computer lab courses to the final year B.Sc.(Hons.) in Mathematics students.
  • The faculty of the department has published about 50 research articles in various national and international journals.
  • The department regularly conducts in house seminars for orientation and international level workshops on the research topics of current interest. To such workshops frontline researchers on the subject are invited to deliver talks.
  • The alumni of the department are well placed both in academics and industry.  Alumni of the Department who ultimately provide the proof of its excellence, have done well.  Some are continuing in the academic field as faculty members (Institute itself and University of Tel. Aviv Israel, TIFR, Bombay) while many others are posted as Senior Scientists in the corporate sector (Dopont, Emerck, P&G, ACS, all in the United States, SPIC at Chennai, India.)
  • The recruitment of the alumni in the premier institutes both inland and abroad like IISc, IIT'S. HCU, NCL-Pune, Caltech-USA, NJIT-USA
  • Exposure to various inter disciplinary courses at the post graduate level enhancing the students to pursue higher studies in varied fields of modern trends in chemistry.
  • One of the Lecturers, Dr. K. Anil Kumar was awarded the coveted Young Teachers Career Award by the All India Council fo Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi in 1996.
  • A monograph is due for publication in an edited book on “Bio-transformation” being brought out by the reputed Springer – Verlag publishers.  A few papers were also presented to national seminars and symposia.  Members of the Faculty have been quite resourceful in undertaking interdisciplinary research.
  • In recent years one such workshop on “Emerging Trends in Structure and Reactivity of Molecules and Applications” was held in January 2000.  Another relating to “Chemistry on Environment” – an important current theme was held in July 2002.  Workshops attended by a large number of national and international experts indeed turned out to be of international standards.
