The Department of Economics has organized an All India Economic Conference on "Economic Growth with Equity and Stability" from 24th August to 26th August, 2006. The Conference was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Sri Anil V. Gokak and the Keynote Address was delivered by Prof. R. Radhakrishna, Director, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development research (IGICR) Mumbai. The following invited special lectures were delivered. About 50 papers were presented by researchers from all over India and faculty members of the University in about 12 technical sessions.

Some highlights of the Department:
- B.A. with Major in Economics is being offered at Prasanthinilayam Campus at Anantapur campus.
- In June 1991, B.Sc.(Hons) Course in Economics was introduced at Prasanthinilayam Campus. The course offers a combination of Economics, Mathematics and Statistics.
- B.Sc. (Hons) in Economics programme was introduced in 1994.
- In accordance with UGC guidelines, a two credit awareness course in 'Environment Studies' was designed to fit into the undergraduate curricula. It came into effect from the academic year 1995-96.
- M.A.(Economics) was introduced in the Prasanthinilayam Campus in June 2001, under the guidance of Prof.Viswanatha Pandit from the Delhi School of Economics. In formulating the programme, special attention has been given to focus on proper training of socially responsible citizens of tomorrow.
- B.A.(Hons) programme in Economics with History and Political Science as additional subjects has been started at the Prasanthinilayam Campus in the academic year 2004. This supplements the existing B.Sc.(Hons) programme in Economics for which Mathematics and Statistics are additional subjects.
- In November 2004, the M.Phil. programme was introduced in all subjects where the postgraduate programmes do exist already. This includes Management, Mathematics & Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences and Economics.
- To mark the 25th anniversary of the Institute, a new Humanities building at Prasanthinilayam Campus was inaugurated by Revered Chancellor on 26th August 2006 in the presence of Chief Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance, GOI, Dr. Ashok K Lahri.
