In the year 2006-2007:
The Department of Home Science conducted a Seminar on "Nutrition Education Approaches" on 1st September, 2006.
A total number of 50 Child Development Project officers and ICDS Supervisors of Anantapur District attended the Seminar. The Department also conducted a cultural programme and an exhibition on 'the importance of nutrition for health' on the same day. The following eminent speakers delivered the lectures:

Major thrust areas and research activities being actively pursued:
The Department has actively engaged in research activities which are undertaken as part of the dissertation work of Post Graduate students. The Department has been able to produce around 50 M.Sc. students in the last five years period. The major areas of research in the Department are:
Clinical Nutrition – Special nutrition for metabolic disorders like diabetes, arthritis, hyper tension, cardiovascular diseases and menopausal symptoms.
Therapeutic Nutrition – Testing the efficacy of some conventional and unconventional functional foods for recovery in disease conditions.
Food science – Development of low cost value added food products utilizing commonly available resources.
Community Nutrition – Undertaking routine nutritional assessment of vulnerable groups in the surrounding rural areas of the campus and assessing the performance of ongoing nutrition programme in the surrounding community.
Experimental Nutrition - Undertaking assessment of Therapeutic Foods Development, Bioavailability assessments, Nutritional and anti-nutritional assessments, Nutrient interaction
Food safety evaluation – Prepared guidelines to villages around the Anantapur District regarding Food safety methods.
The Department has also undertaken one major research project funded by the UGC for the benefit of local catering centers under the title: “Impact of Educational Prgramme of Microbiological Safety of Small Food Catering Centers of Anantapur”. The research work over the years has received wide acceptance at national and international levels and the department has published around 30 publications in national and international journals.
The Department proposes to undertake intensive extension activities for the benefit of the society in the following areas in the next five year plan:
Nutrition Education: Providing nutrition education to the vulnerable groups viz. pregnant lactating women, anemic adolescent girls, etc.
Referent Novel approaches: Positive deviance, use of Audio Visual aids, Nutrition games and lectures & demonstrations.
The Anantapur Campus has 83 acres of land and the Department of Bio-Sciences and Home Science contemplate on the development of this area raising medicinal plants, endangered species, and other plants to carry out the research in areas of medicinal plants, biodiversity & conservation, plant nutrition & food technology and biotechnology.
Other highlights:
- The department undertakes a compulsory full dissertation work at M.Sc. level. So far the department has produced M.Sc. dissertaions on the following major areas.
- a) Clinical nutrition
- b) Experimental nutrition
- c) Food Science
- d) Community nutrition
- Frequent revision of the curriculum i.e. once in every year is undertaken in order to suit the requirements for competitive tests, UGC curriculum and for up-gradation to match recent developments in areas of Home Science, Foods & Nutrition etc. In the last revision the following major modifications were done for M.Sc. Curriculum.
- A. Introduction of the new courses viz.
- i. Food biotechnology
- ii. Computer applications in Statistics and Community education
- iii. Advances in Macronutrient metabolism.
- B. Evaluation procedures were modified: Comprehensive Viva voce was introduced at M.Sc. level.
- C. To enhance the skill, practicals were introduced in all the courses at Post Graduate level.
